PRELUDE TO MESSIAH

PRELUDE TO MESSIAH

A Poem by moonbeam40
"

MORECHANNELLINGS FROM THE COMFORTER.

"

To counterbalance peace and quiet, and check the

Growth of brain, Athens gave war to Sparta, was

Destroyed and rose again,  a sign of things to come indeed! but Grecians had not seen, they

Bemoaned the past, shut future out, and cursed the time between!

Socrates and Plato came to the seat of learned  Revival, pericles beat Persia, and Marathon was Lauded, battle and brawn were famous then,

And so was Greek survival, the whole known world Sat back and smiled, and ironically applauded!

The thunder rose, the Earth-World shook,

For God stood at the door; yet men on Earth

Shut out the sound, engrossed in human play:

Alexander of Macedonia strutted forth and

Took the floor, turning his back on Europe,

To seek a richer prey, striding as far as India,

Subduing Egypt in his stride, accepting Egypts

'worship as Pharoahs'  son and heir.

Osiris must have smiled at him: he smashed the

Persian pride, defeated Kings, beat Empires down, And took the lions' share.

God at the door frowned down on him, and on

The title 'Great':

"One is great!"  the thunder cried " Alexanders"

Star must wane!"

Then Hannibal came across the Alps to seal

The Grecians' fate.

Carthage gone, and Greece subdued!

Earth ripe for Roman reign! Pompey rivalling

Caesar in his conquering campaign!

Rome increased in power, heard the Thunder in The air, Caesar returned to rule in Rome: but soon

Went West again: The Ides of March were hectic Days, and Rome was full of care.

The harlot Queen of Egypt came, adorable and fair, she conquered twice her conquerers, and

Seduced them in her lair;  but at last fair

Cleopatra failed: Augustas did not dissemble:

And her passing was eclipsed by news which

caused her land to tremble!

The doors were down, the  thunder loud with

A humble incarnation!

And a wild-eyed prophet called aloud for human

Reparation.
