Germany, 1996

A Poem by prettybretty

i went to Germany today
i went to 1996
and missed you in my dream.
in black and white,
that lives more than colour.
across the equator,
i'll wait for you outside the lens
of my former life camera.
and when i show up on the film,
i won't appear there at all,
'cause i'm too busy playing
on our beaches and fields,
with you as i left the ghost behind.
and i will live in my dream
as long as i goddamn please,
'cause i know that God is kind.
i went to Germany, to 1996
as there was no wall to divide.
"Berlin, symphony of a city"
played in cinemas
but everything was quite long ago.
i've got to tell you that everything exists
all at the exact same time.
i read you Sylvia and Anne,
i took some photographs,
i sang "I'll Take You Home Again Kathleen"
and you said i was a good kid.
but now my stomach has a pit,
you flew back to Berlin
when i was 8 and you said
"goodbye, my munchkin".
as years have passed,
i've made new friends,
but will they come from Argentina?
will they come from Puerto Rico?
will they come from Vietnam?
and will they come from England?
i'm nostalgic for what never could be,
and yet is.
