Barbie ArmsA Poem by MontanaMy joint frustrations
My shoulders are a little messed up
Usually they work alright But I’ve been searching a while For a way to describe the sudden pain Of trying to move a little too far A little too fast And where I usually start is “You know the resistance you feel when you try and pull the arm off a Barbie doll?” Disturbingly enough this seems to be a shared childhood memory Because most people nod “Well take that and imagine that you’re a real person and that hurts” After they chuckle they think And then they look at my shoulders as if they’re trying to pull one of them out in their minds I pull them back Mostly self consciously But partially to prove that I still can That despite my Barbie-fragile joints I am still in control Maybe my scapula pops And adds to my mild embarrassment But it’s alright I’ve already proved my point. © 2018 MontanaAuthor's Note
