Unrequited

Unrequited

A Poem by KB

She smiles to hide the lies,
To hide the only truth
That she can’t bear to hold inside.
Apprehensive,
She knows this is her fall.

“My darling, my Love, this is right,”
The sultry static in the air breathes
As she moves closer,
Tempted.
Waiting.

The three unspoken words show in her eyes,
Though will never fall from her lips.
Idle fingers trace circles and lines,
Tentatively,
Over un-kissable flesh.

“I’m yours, I’m yours, my Love,”
Beats the two broken hearts
Rhythmically,
As skin touches skin;
Electrified, Petrified.

They smile to hide the lies,
And speak the only truths
That neither can bear to keep inside.
Deadlocked, disagreeing,
They know this is their fall.

“I was yours, I was yours,”
Beats the two broken hearts,
Out of time,
As skin leaves skin;
Frost-bitten and lost.

She smiles to hide the lie,
To mask the only truth
That she refused to hold inside.
Desolate,
She knew her love would be her fall.

“My darling, my love, this is right,”
Sobs the Forgotten,
Despondent, Unconfident,
“This was right.”
