GoodnightA Poem by Tara♥Undefined♥Lights blinking in variations of vibrant colors, Red, blue, green, yellow, then red again. People pass by in packs, some holding hands, some in conga lines, some alone, but all smiling, enjoying themselves. I make my way through the crowded room, the room has a peculiar odor and a persistent twitch to it. Shoes fill the lockers in rows upon rows. The world around us almost oblivious to our midnight fun. As I pull off my 2004 all stars I giggle at my mismatched socks. I was clearly rushed out here. Slipping heavy weights onto my feet tightening the wheels, I remember my neon socks again. I smile and stand. Fumble at first like a baby learning to walk, then I am fine and I make my smile fade to squint. The lighting changes and the swarms of people change direction. A new song begins and the announcer declares a couple skate. I had almost forgotten about my partner beside me until now, the awkward drive up, embarrassing start. I was ready to let loose and have fun now, He looks nervous so I give him a reassuring smile and lace my fingers through his and we move. Gliding past the others they pay us no attention until we bump into one another and tumble to the ground. Laughing we stand and keep going. Circling around and around for hours somehow brought me joy. I smile as friends stop and catch up, each of them giving knowing glances toward my partner. All girls now, I release him to the packs of boys on the other side that keeps them out. Without his fingers laced through mine I feel alone but another girl takes my hand and we skate and talk until the song comes to an end. Now the girls move out and the boys can take their turn. I sit and think until the song ends and glide over to embrace my partner as he exits as if I hadn't seen him ages. Our fingers lace again and we skate for the last song I'm not ready to leave but I must. The rush of people to the lockers grabbing their shoes and slipping off the heavy wheels is loud but I look to my partner and the rest of the world fades out. As we leave I look to the skies and find one simple star. Just one in this light polluted town, but one is enough for tonight, A special star. the rest of the night is a blur, another silent awkward car ride and a quick hug at the door. My family was waiting up for me, the porch light is on. So I leave you but remember for the rest of that night that I am finally happy. © 2010 Tara♥Undefined♥Author's Note
