Chapter 2

Days passed by. Still no sign of Victor. We had begun to believe he had forgotten. We cared no more about hiding in fear. We were together now. Diarmuid and I were together forever. I would never let him go.

It was late October, almost a month since I arrived in Pinecrest Village. I had been living with Diarmuid and his family. His mother saw me as a daughter, his grandmother the same, and I felt welcome at last. I had somewhere I belonged. With people who loved me.

I never had dreams before. I never had a family. I was alone. I was my own best friend. Now I had everything I could ever want. Everything I could ever ask for. My life was finally real and good. What I wanted once, I now had. Diarmuid was now my life. We had plans for the future. We wanted to be together forever. We even planned to marry when we were old enough.

I played with the children in the village everyday. I taught them to read and write and how to stand up for themselves more than anything. One day I was writing in the sand, showing the children some words they didn't understand, when Diarmuid came to see me.

He picked me up by my waist, twirling me in the air, my dress flowing gracefully on the sand. He kissed me and set me down still tightly gripping my waist. The children giggled and pointed playfully but I shoed them away.

"That's enough children. Go on home." I said smiling and blushing.

The children ran quickly back toward Pinecrest and Diarmuid and I waited for them to be out of sight.

" Luna, sweet, sweet Luna." Diarmuid looked longingly my way.

"Alright. What do you want?" I asked jokingly while pulling away from his grasp. He waited for a moment while I cleaned up my belongings.

" It's not that bad of a thing to ask of you." he stated with a bit too much over-confidence and astuteness. I stopped sighed and put my hands on my hips before responding.

"The what is it?" I whispered un-patiently, walking toward him once again and enveloping him in my arms.

" OK. Alright." he said laughing. " I wanted to say that. Since we've been together so long. You still love me don't you?" his voice had a slight tint of fear in it.

" Of course I do." I responded quickly. " I'll never stop loving you. I promise that."

"Of course and I you, but i wanted to ask." I nodded for him to continue. He cleared his throat and asked in a deeper voice. " Luna, marry me." It was more a demand than a question. I let go of him and fell to the sand laughing as the foamy waves of the ocean lapped up the end of my dress.

"Why would you ask me that?" I said in a giggly voice.

"I wanted to.. I don't know. What is so funny about this exactly?" He demanded, offended by my behavior.

"Sweetie, You don't have to ask me that." I blurted out rather loudly and still filled with giggles. " Of course I would marry you. Sometimes you are so silly." I laughed. He was clearly still offended but he seemed to lighten up a bit at my words. " I'm sorry. yes, I would love to marry you." By that time I couldn't take it anymore. The laughter I was holding back came out quickly and I fell over on my side laughing till I was out of breath.

He stood red faced and confused for a moment but soon loosened up and laid down next to me. He brushed the hair out of my face and smiled. Though no words were spoken I could feel he was saying to me "Luna I love you." I could just feel it. After a long time we awoke on the beach, staring up at the beautiful glow of the moon and the stars. It was much too late to be out. We jumped up quickly and gathered our things to go home.

We both smiled and kissed one another as we started heading back toward
Pinecrest. Suddenly we heard the sound of approaching hooves. I grabbed
Diarmuid's arm and when he tried to speak I covered his mouth with my hand
and motioned to him to stay put. I peered around the corner of the wooded
path and what I saw froze me almost completely through.

Victor's army was on its way to the village. I noticed one of the
fiercesome guards leading the pack. I turned to Diarmuid and without words,
he understood and grabbed my hand. We ran quietly farther down the path
to hide ourselves and still be able to see and hear, well at least I would hear
it, and sat.

As the hoof-beats came closer I could feel the anger raging in me like
never before! These are the people that kept me from this world. They
forced me to be alone, they kept me locked up with nothing, all alone sad and
hopeless. They took what glimpse of a life I could have had.

I was quickly shaken from my thoughts and brought back to the reality that the army
was approaching the unsuspecting villagers. One of the local women was walking
across the gravel road with a basket of laundry. As soon as she saw the
silver suited men, she dropped her basket and ran to herd her children into
the house for safety.

The sound of the basket hitting the gravel was loud and slow in my
ears and filled me with great pain. I could feel the fear of the women, see
the pain in her eyes. It was pure horror to see what wasn’t sadly surprising.
The men continued into the village, trampling anything and anyone that stood
in their way.

They stopped in front of the place I had feared and by the look on
Diarmuid’s face he was afraid of the same thing. When the men stopped in
front of Diarmuid’s home, he turned to run and help. I stopped him , I
couldn’t let him be found. It would endanger him and his family. We had to
stay where we were.

The lead guard was the first to speak.

"We are sent by the Grand Admiral. A young girl escaped from prison
a few months back. He has requested a search party and told us we might find her
here. Do you know anything about this. She is extremely dangerous. If you
don’t tell me where she is you’ll endanger your whole village." Diarmuid’s
mother shook her head but never spoke. We thought we were safe until one
of the children in the village saw Diarmuid and me and yelled our names,
happy to see us. The guard turned instantly and sent his army into the woods
where we were hiding.

"Oh no!!" Diarmuid and I said in unison at a low whisper, barely
noticeable amongst the ruckus. We took off hand in hand running like the
wind, but right when we thought we had lost them, I felt a hand grab me
around the waist and I screamed!

"Diarmuid." My cries died quickly to a whimper as the man who grabbed me held a dagger to my throat. He never took his eyes off my hands. Other men began to surround us. All staring intently at me with their vicious eyes.

"No, Luna, Lunaaaaa!" screamed Diarmuid who was being restrained by
many of the armored men. It took four of them to hold him back from
saving me.

"Luna I will come for you, I’ll find you, they can’t stop me." His
promise was filled with hopelessness and we both began to weep and reach
for each other. It was no use . At that moment , I wished that I had never
come to this place with Diarmuid. We would not have to suffer this and nor
would this poor village.

I eventually gave up fighting back and let them have me, I wouldn’t let
this cause the people here any more trouble. I would go down quietly and
perhaps they would show me mercy.
