As a childA Chapter by Tara♥Undefined♥Growing up, Noelani was an unusual child. She was different than everyone else and didn't have many friends. She tended to wear a lot of dark clothing and, with her pale complextion and dark hair, she scared some of the others.
She didn't mind though. She liked being by herself most of the time. But, it seemed like she tended to need me most when the rain dissapeared.
We lived in London at the time and it rained almost every day. That's the way she liked it. She had never cried before. Not once in her life had she cried untill the rain went away.
"Why Mama?" she would cry "Why are they runnung away from me? Why don't they like me anymore? THey used to come and visit me everywhere. I miss their stories Mama." Indeed the rain had run away from her. But for what reason, I did not know.
" Child. The rain is not a person. It doesn't live or breathe or hear." I would say. I didn't understand why she felt the way she did. I though it was just a phase in her life, but as the years passed, her obsession with the rain began to grow. Everywhere she went the rain would await her only to dissappear at her presence.
"Why Mama? Why?" It continued into her teenage years. At fourteen she realized something that filled in all the pages. The rain was afraid of her.
It knew that Noelani could read its mind. It was afraid to show her any more pain. But it was unseccesful. Everyday she came to me with more terrible news about things that had happened. Things that were happening because she could, no matter where the rain was, sense its pain unraveling into the distance.
"My child, stop listening." I would say "Stop listening to it. You don't have to listen." but I knew that she did. She had to listen. She had to hear it. If she didn't, no one would.
By the time she was 18 she had learned how to talk back to it. To comprehend each messages meaning. To focus in and see exactly where the events were taking place.
She had, a few time, been close enough to the scenes that she could make it in time to help the people, but not always. She had stopped a man from mmugging an old woman. She had scared off a strange figure stalking a young girl, but she failed to save a life that was dear to her. This was the day she met her mother.
She was walking home from school and had heard, when it began to rain, the cry of a woman in pain.. She heard it close, but it was much farther than anticipated and she didn't make it in time. When she got to the alley way she saw a dark cloak runing away from a bloodstained scene.
She weeped at the sight of the poor woman she had failed to save. That retched thing had taken the women's life. She was still partially conscience when Noelani fell by her side.
"Noelani," The woman strained to say her name.
" Yes, How do you know my name?"
"It is time" the woman said " Tell her that Mother has died. Please." she begged
"Who? Tell who?" Noelani questioned warily.
"Your mother dear. The one who raised you. She will know what to do." Noelani stopped talkingand came back to the wound that was hopelessly taking the woman now.
"We have to get you help." She said as she tried to pull the woman up off the wet ground, but she just shook her head and began to fade. As she faded Noelani's eyes filled with tears and she realized that this woman was exactly like her childhood stories. They were about a woman who faded away into a sparkle of rain. Leaving behind a young girl each time. How had this woman done this to her. She had no idea what had just come over her.
She was to busy crying to realize the rain had stopped and was now silent in her except for faint sobs that seemed to be for the woman as well as her own. The cries called "Mother, Mother." It was the scariest thing ever for Noelani.
SHe straightened out anyway and began to move on toward home, prepared to do as the woman had asked of her, leaving behind a trickle of golden mist that lyed over the spot where the woman had dissappeared. © 2010 Tara♥Undefined♥Author's Note
