"Single"

"Single"

A Poem by Monday Parker

I keep reading the words “single” on your

MySpace page

And I just can’t get my head around the thought

That you’re not mine anymore

After so many years

Sleeping on the same pillows side by side

That me and you are no more

Shatters something very solid inside me.

Something that held me together.

I thought that was it

Our story book love.

I tried so hard to be straight with you

To keep everything pure.

Just him and me….

Now I am seeing the word “single” on his

And the word “single” on mine

And its so hard to believe.

That it is really over this time

And he soon will be with someone new

And I am sitting here crying over him

The best I ever had….

Watching the dreams I had for us

Disappear one by one

Each place I saw myself … each road in life

Ripped out from beneath my feet.

My tears come often and quick…

While I sit here staring at  his face on my computer screen.

That is so terribly sad, Monday, in a number of ways. The breakdown of a long-term relationship is bad enough, but in the light of modern technology the present generation, it seems, can never really put it behind them because there are so many ways that the memories keep flooding back. The Internet with all its facebooks and myspaces may be fine in a way, but the temptation will always be there to check on what the other party is doing, and the knowledge of this can be heartbreaking. It was easier in our day just to walk away and not look back. That's no longer possible, is it? We live in a society where there are no secrets anymore. There is nowhere we can go to hide. Information is everything, and in this scenario, information can be devastating.
David.
