LucyA Poem by Monday ParkerWritten for the Image of Her contestI remember her The way her eyes gleamed in the summer sun Her laugh echoes in my ears Haunting me with its presence. Since she has been gone all these years. I remember it all More than I would care to The way his eyes filled with cold tears The day they found her there I can still hear his animal cry “Not Lucy” I scrubbed his jeans later yet there are still stained With the river mud from when he dropped to his knees By her limp wet body. I remember it all Helping carry him to the car Standing by his side when we burred her I was there when the traveling sailor Tattooed her face on his chest Each night crawling into his arms for comfort Seeing Lucy Never being able to forget I am an old woman now Seeing the face of my dead child Staring out from the chest of my dead husband… I remember it all….
