THE AWAKENING

A Chapter by Monica

Chapter 1

I found my mother’s lifeless body next to me when I woke up this morning. I had no words, for who could do such a thing, I tried to scream, but my voice wasn’t going to have it, I wanted to cry, but I felt no pain. I heard footsteps coming up stairs, but the door never opened.

“Cassidy!”

I suddenly came to a realization, that my mom was alive, and was trying to shake me awake.

“Alright mom, geez, I’m up ok?”

“Well you’re the one who told me to wake you up aggressively, anyway, your father and I need to talk to you, so hurry up and get downstairs.”

“Fine, I’ll be down in a minute.”

After my mom left the room, I still felt terrified from the dream I had, and yes I said dream because to be honest it would have to be more drastic than my mother’s lifeless body next to me in order for it to be a nightmare. I’m terrible, I know.

When I get downstairs, the first thing that I notice are the boxes, and immediately I get that feeling that I know what mom and dad want to talk about.

My dad walks up to me and gives me a huge hug. This is weird and I don’t like it.

“Good morning sweetheart, how did you sleep?”

I looked at my dad as if he had lost his mind. He has never said sweetheart, I must be dreaming or I’ve been kidnapped and drugged.

“Uh, good morning dad, what’s with all of the boxes?”

“Oh, um, that’s what your mother and I need to talk to you about, we found another house, that’s…”

“Dad, if you’re about to tell me that we’re moving, you can forget it.”

I am tired of moving, we’ve moved so many times, that I’ve lost count. Why move now, it’s my junior year of highschool, why not let me finish, and then they can move, while I go on to college. Suddenly my mom steps in with a look of sympathy.

“Look Cassidy, your father and I understand that you’re tired of moving, but it’s for the best.”

“But, it’s the middle of my junior year, why should I have to move, you guys can go, while I stay here, and look for a place to stay.”

My dad’s hand massages his forehead out of irritation.

“Cassidy, you’re not going to be on your own.”

“Why not?” My tone was beginning to turn and soon, an atomic bomb was bound to go off.

My mother’s face expression deepened into a more sorrow look.

“Cassidy.” She stuttered. “ There are some things you won’t understand, just please listen, and go pack up your things. Please sweetheart.”

“Mom?” I was confused on what was going on, why were they acting like this? It’s not like her or dad to act like this.

“What’s going on?”

Before my mom could get her words out, there was a knock at the door.

No one moved for a moment, but the knocking continued, and had gotten louder.

My dad hesitantly opened the door, before he could open it all the way, his head jerked back so hard, that I laughed a little, but I stopped after I saw the blood that was spewing out of him. Three men dressed in black came into view holding guns.

“Get on the ground or I’ll blow your f*****g head off!” One of the men shouted.

My mom and I did as we were told, but then,I noticed that my mom was eyeballing the door and their guns really hard.

I wanted to calm my mom down and tell her that we’ll be fine, but I knew that I’d be lying. The men then shot my mom without hesitating, I knew that I was next, so I closed my eyes and waited for the piercing of a bullet. Nothing. I opened my eyes to see what was going on. A guy who I believed was the leader of this group approached me. I could smell the hard liquor he had been drinking and marijuana seemed to have a presence on him as well. He grab me by the back of my neck and whispered, “we are going to have fun princess.”

At that moment I really didn’t care what they did to me. I just wish that they’d put a bullet in my head, so that I could be with my parents. My parents. The thought of their blood splattered everywhere made me tremble, it made me feel a rage that I never knew was there. We began walking to a white van and I felt my rage come to a boil, well more like Mount Vesuvius, anyway, I stopped walking and kicked the balls of the guy in front of me. I then football shoved the guy behind me and started to run.
