Escape Artist

Escape Artist

A Poem by Molly D

70 more minutes
until you take me home
in attempt to avoid my mother's fury.

driving past eighteen wheelers,
compact cars
and terrible yellow pick ups
pounding the ceiling with each broken headlight.

you,
comparing me to a boy;
the curiosity of 6 year old
with a libido like i just turned 13.

me,
correcting your grammar
with each passing story,
punctuating every sentence with a laugh.

your headlights invade the black space
on the road as you crest the hill,

taking me safely home,
leaving me 24 hours
to try and escape to you.

I was really impressed by the refreshing word usage in this piece; "as you crest the hill," "punctuating every sentence with a laugh" -- these are excellent phrasings and offer vivid emotion and visuals. Poetry is not my personal forte, so I apologize for being unable to comment on the technicalities, but I truly enjoyed this piece.

This has captivated me somewhat for different reasons. One is the slight confusion I have for: 'and terrible yellow pick ups pounding the ceiling with each broken headlight.' Im desperately searching for a meaning behind that. Is it a metaphorical ceiling or just literal? I'd love it if you could clear that up for me.

One part I just thought as brilliant was 'me, correcting your grammar with each passing story, punctuating every sentence with a laugh.' A genius metaphor I think. It makes me wonder whether the laughs are genuine or just false to keep the other-half talking.
