The Fourth Of You Die

The Fourth Of You Die

A Poem by Michael Stevens
"

Late, I know, but I did write this on the fourth

"

From sea to shining sea,

Nothing says we are free,

Sums up America''s values,

Like guns win, you lose,

Your life, their lives, insanity

Runs in the gutter, profanities

Escape my mouth, fall on deaf

Ears, tone-deaf Republicans bereft

Of shame or common sense,

Offer another hollow and weak defence,

Of sitting back and doing nothing,

No guts, no solutions, do something,

Anything to help, and at least try

As their fellow citizens line up to die

Your poem is a powerful commentary on the issue of gun violence in America. The opening lines "From sea to shining sea, nothing says we are free" set the stage for a critique of American values, and your use of imagery - guns win, you lose - is particularly effective. The idea that the lives lost to gun violence are running in the gutter is a powerful one, and your frustration with the lack of action from politicians is palpable. The line "no guts, no solutions, do something" is particularly powerful, as it suggests that action is needed to address this issue. Overall, I think your poem is a powerful call to action and a reminder that we need to do more to address the issue of gun violence in America.
