The Self-Inflicted Monster

The Self-Inflicted Monster

A Poem by Michael Stevens
"

We do it to ourselves

"

Beware the monster that we will into existence.

Our own insecurities feed it until it lives on its own.

More destructive than the worst plague.

An uncrowned misery king on a personalized throne.

It doesn't have to grow, it doesn't have to be,

we opened the door and invited it in,

so there's no one else to blame, and yet we try.

We long to be something we've never been,

or "I can't do it, I'll probably screw it up," defeated

before you've even begun, you've lost, lost, lost,

the game is over before you've even begun to play.

We all have such a cross to bear, and pay a heavy cost.
