His Only Mistake

His Only Mistake

A Poem by Molly Garnet

One drop of coffee slips down the side of the mug as I take a sip

I would say it mirrors my own cheek

If I were crying, that is

But I’m not

It’s nothing more than a single drop of coffee

That mug is one of his

He brought it here one morning and never thought to take it back

And so it collected dust with my mugs

And I never noticed

He is the nicest boy I’ve ever known

The closest thing to perfect I’ve ever known

Handsome and charming and loving but never pushy

He had to leave

I don’t take kindly to kindness

And he learned time and time again that no matter

How beautiful my eyes were

And how much he loved me

I’d never believe a word of it

If only receiving love were as simple as giving it

I broke his heart

Because he deserves someone

Who will blush and say “thank you”

Every so sweetly

To words of beautiful eyes and love

My days with him were the best of my life

And I’m hopelessly in love with him

His only mistake

Was falling for a cynic like me.

This is beautiful but saddening. I know how it is to not really believe you're beautiful regardless of how many people tell you that you are. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you so much, I'm glad you enjoyed it
It is hard to accept love when all you've ever done was drown in quiet self-loathing... blind to the way others see you, especially when it does not reflect the image that you see. You've never truly believed that you were beautiful, or believe that you ever will be. It's like, you won't let yourself be happy because you don't think that you deserve it...

And yet, you see love and beauty in him and it's the most wonderful thing you've ever known.
Be brave in love.

Men like woman that test them. I like woman who kept you grounded and surprised. I enjoyed the flow of the poem leading to the good ending. You want to tempt a man. Don't treat him politely and nice. Thank you for sharing the outstanding poetry.
