A Poem by Molly Garnet

The world’s a dark place for a girl like me

where every love is fleeting

and every friendship is on the clock

every passion…

every ambition…

nothing more than a passing phase

things don’t matter to girls like me

because it’s all ephemeral

relationships and careers

and talk of this strange “forever”

that everyone seems to expect

but me

and we all reach our expectations, don’t we

nothing is undying

even the holiest of flames burn out

when a little uninvited wind slips through

promises are for fools

with a thirst to break someone beautiful

and covenants?

how naïve, my dear

there are no such things

my only eternal possesions are my words

and what kind of poet throws around words like “things”

what an ugly word

I digress

I am nothing if not consistent

I can’t even commit to 27 serrated lines

28 now

and so is life.
