Coffee Shop ObservationsA Poem by Molly Garnet
I could sit at this coffee shop all night
Watching Listening Reading people I like to imagine what their stories are We all have one, you know The girl at the table for two in the back corner sits alone She has books and papers But she's distracted Glancing at the door Anxious Waiting Waiting What's her story? On the couches in the middle sit four best friends Three boys One girl They're talking a bit too loud for an evening at the coffee shop, but no one complains They can't seem to stop laughing And we all watch them, envious of their bliss But I see the way he looks at her She doesn't give it a second thought, but he leans a little closer to hear her His eyes dart to her after every joke It breaks my heart The other two friends don't even notice Just me What's his story? There's a little girl, no more than six, sitting with her father He hasn't put his phone down since I've been here And she's just staring out the window What's her story? Life is so damn hard For everyone My coffee shop observations are humble But their stories are not I wonder if anyone tells my story But they don't I know they don't Because my story is simply theirs Lonely in the back corner still waits as I collect my things Rejected still looks at his love with diamonds in his eyes Forgotten breaks her stare just long enough to look longingly at her father And I pick up my things and go. © 2013 Molly Garnet |
