My Wild ExcursionA Poem by Molly SanbornStanding
at the boundary between two worlds, Behind
me signs of humanity, Cookie
cutter houses and telephone wires stretching onto the horizon, The
jarring noise of cars and airplanes at warp speed.
Ahead
of me lay the wild lands untouched by human existence. I
am an intruder here, At
peace but still not belonging. Walking
into this world, slowing down, observing.
Suddenly
standing in the middle of a tiny airport, Their
fragile wings somehow emitting an engine-like roar, Taxiing
over the dry, coarse ground, Traveling
to places only they know exist.
Next
to me the colors of the rainbow, Sprinkled
over the ground looking like the window of a candy store. In
such sporadic clumps that I can imagine a colossal giant, Walking,
throwing seeds over his shoulder.
Suddenly
I startle from my stupor; The
hellish screech of a creature otherworldly inundates my ears. I
look up; the creature in question is scouting, scouring the lush green
landscape, Preparing
to clamp its talons around the squirming body of its next victim.
A
tickling sensation on my leg, I look down. A
pair of curious eight-legged explorers, No
doubt out to soak up the afternoon sun on this glorious day, Not
unlike myself. I
brush them off.
The
fresh air completely enveloping, Feeling
cool, crisp and clean on my skin. The
scents of wild grass, manure, nature ambushing my nose.
Abruptly
the trail ends. Surprisingly,
my journey has taken no time at all. Suddenly
despondent to return back to the world I came from, But
I know I can return to this world of wonder. © 2016 Molly Sanborn |
