CROWN JEWELS

CROWN JEWELS

A Poem by Cynthia Bateman

CROWN JEWELS

My love strode to the mountaintop
leaving footprints in the sky.
He went to find a diamond
and bring it from on high

to place upon my finger
in a ring of purest gold.
'Twas meant to show his love for me,
extravagant and bold.

He wandered through the forest,
with neither map nor guide
looking for a spider's web
still pure and untried

to adorn my neck in beauty
most exquisitely rare.
It sparkles still with the morning's dew
caught in his tiny snare.

He swam the lake to there and back
and rose not a single wave,
seeking for me perfect pearls
hid in a freshwater cave

to grace my ears with the gentle glow
of those who gave them birth.
Such jewels have I, from my dearest love
as no one else on earth.
