The Ringing Telephone

The Ringing Telephone

A Poem by Mercedes
"

One little call can make your whole world fall apart again.

"

Today, as I sat so still and calm,

Happy in my own little world,

The phone rang,

And I saw your number

Flashing on the screen.

For a second,

My heart seemed to stop.

That little bit of it,

Those locked away and

Forgotten feelings,

Rushed back so quickly

I felt like I was drowning,

Suffocating in my own emotion.

All that pain, heartache, grief -

Flooded right back.

Long hidden away,

Those renewed memories

Seemed so fresh, so vivid.

That knife in my chest

As you walked away,

The silence I couldn’t escape.

For all the pleading, and crying,

Nothing could change your mind.

Back then, it seemed like I had died,

Become a shell of my former self.

Days were eternity,

With the constant reminders of you.

Slowly, I revived,

Regaining fragments

Of my once vibrant personality.

Like a flower in the spring,

I grew into a new person.

Love brought me back,

A person so sweet, so caring,

Put all the pieces back together.

And then the phone rang…

… and I remembered…
