midnight

midnight

A Poem by aspen

the scent of peaches clings to me in the pale moonlight.
my bare feet secure their grounding in the frigid grass.
an emptiness crawls up my throat,
causing me to cough up roses.
i'm dancing to the sound of your love songs,
they've been taunting me since November.
i excavate a grave for my pain but ending up collapsing in alongside it,
unable to escape what I've created.
you vanished at midnight,
as if we had been living in a fairy tale and someone decided to break the spell.
shadows loom over me,
clawing their way into my head.
I've been trying to shake myself awake since then.

Brilliantly nuanced writing! As a straightforward writer I often don't understand some aspects of writing such as this. But I'm happy to say I really do follow you & your imagery is bright & fresh & meaningful! I love the way this reads like a story (((HUGS))) fondly, Margie

I like your tone of voice in this and the way you use words as descriptive - it reads like story almost. Beautiful imagery. I can see the girl digging a grave in nature but I can also sense it being a not so literal reference to a relationship that ended.

I love how you use the language.
"i'm dancing to the sound of your love songs,
they've been taunting me since November."
The above lines. Haunting and very good. I liked the flow of thoughts leading to honest ending. Thank you Allison for sharing the amazing poetry.
