New Surroundings

New Surroundings

A Story by Mockingbird

Imagine that you're in a room, surrounded by strangers. A voice instructs everyone to take a seat, so you pick the chair nearest to you. Music plays, and everyone gets up and walks around. As the music stops, everyone scrambles to find a seat. I'm sure that you're assuming that you're playing music chairs at this point, but you're not. A chair never leaves: you always have a seat.

The rules of this game were never explained to you, so you turn to the person at your right in hopes of figuring out what' going on. No luck. He doesn't know either. But your curiosity sparked a conversation with the stranger. The time goes by, and the conversation continues.

Then the music begins to play, and you are forced to separate yourself from your new friend. Again, you're surrounded by strangers. Again the music stops. Again you take a seat. Again you express your curiosity about the game. Again a conversation starts. Again you become friends. And again, the music start and you're forced to move.

Move. That's what this is really about. Moving. From place to place. Leaving old friends behind. Being surrounded by strangers. Making new friends. And moving again. It's like a never-ending circle.

Bring a child of a parent in the military, I've experienced this a lot. It's a part of my life. But do I consider that a bad thing? No.

No, moving is not bad. No, making new friends is not bad. It may be bad to leave your old friends behind, but there's always ways to keep in touch. It just may not be the same as it was before.

Like in the game, while you're scrambling to find a new seat, you could have a quick, "Hey, what's up?" kind of conversation with one of the people you've sat with previously, but it won't be the same as sitting down and conversing with them for an extended period of time.

That's just like moving around with the military, in my opinion. You can spend a few years, making friends and seeing the sights, but life catches up with you and forces you to move on. Life forces you to surround yourself with new people. New experiences.

New surroundings cause change. And there's nothing wrong with change. There is nothing wrong with bettering yourself.

I like it! And since you've said you don't tend to finish your writing, you might consider sticking to stories, 'cause they're really good. But, I don't know....I've never seen you do a book before, so who am I to judge you? (laughs at myself) Keep writing though!

About
I have a tendency of never finishing my writing, partially because I'm afraid of how they will turn out and partially because I run out of ideas. So, more likely than not, my submissions onto this .. more..
