The Red Dress

The Red Dress

A Poem by Jacqueline
"

Inspired by a scene from 'Jezebel'- just more contemporary ;)

"

The Red Dress

she steps out onto the
dancefloor
daring anyone to ignore
the fabric loving every
inch of her form

glances and whispers
follow her like disapproving
shadows
the clicking of her heels
make more people take notice

the man on her arm is an
afterthought
the music skips but gets
back on track as her hips
sway to the beat and she's
not even dancing-still
walking

women spraypainted with
envy hold on to their men;
their teeth sucking making
her feel a bit self counscious
yet she loves every minute of
it

finally her man gives her
what she wants-
the adulation from other
men and the scorn of
every female in the room
she's starting to regret
the power that she has

suddenly she wants to slink
away
to leave and pretend that
night never happened but he
won't let her
"You wanted to shower in the
attention, so bathe in it!"
he hisses and holds her
prisoner on the dancefloor

only the dj sees the pain and
remorse in her eyes and stops
the music so that she can
escape
he knows that malice isn't in
her heart
he receives a smile of gratitude
as teardrops are her runway out
the door

the red dress continued to love
her; the organza fabric hugging
her form

It's amazing; I'm not into too many classic movies (save some Film Noir) but when 'Jezebel' came on one night I couldn't tear away from it! Bette is the business!

It's so sad.. I think it's really breathtakingly gorgeous though. It's almost like I was there.. with your words, you painted the perfect picture in my mind. =] Excellent job using descriptions. You let us inside her mind, her male friend's mind, and the minds of everyone else in the room. Another great thing that adds some real dimension to this complex piece.

Great work, and I would love to read more things that you have written! Very impressive.

Wasn't she absolutely gorgeous in that! All that sex appeal and those marvelous eyes - she had IT with just a raised eyebrow or a tilt of her head - but then when she put on the glam = pure power! This is a great poem in tribute and understanding of what it is to be just so envied - isn't that something that happens to us all the time..... haha..... I also know what you mean about flipping channels and catching something - especially some classic that it has been never or 100 yrs since you saw it..... I watched the end of StepMom the other day.... just to cry I think...... Wow, thanks for all the good thoughts here!

Breathtakingly beautiful with a melancholy twist. But kudos for the dj guy though, he's gotta be the hero in this poem, I believe. Beautifully worded!

"he hisses and hold her" - "holds"

A lovely poem with great descriptions. A scene run rampant. Let them stare! Good read.
