Tears streaming from the heart

Sorrow is Sorry's Neglected Sister

here we are
in the same meeting place
i chose
just to see your face
one last time
you could tell over the
phone how things
just didn't sound right
my usual steady voice
quivered
as we made plans to
be together
tonight

your arms remained
empty
as you waited for me
to run to them
i just sat on the bed
staring at the ground
trying so hard to keep
my tears from falling
down
"No, you can't..."
you started, then threw
your coat on the hotel
bed
we were supposed to have
a hot night of passion
but you feel the beginning
of my kiss-off instead

i look at you and the
words appear in my eyes
for weeks i've been
acting a bit funny
so this wasn't a total
surprise-
for you
as for me, i was on
the fence
what i've been doing for
over a year
stopped making sense

on a whim i allowed
my heart to split in two
one half truly in love
with the man waiting at
home faithfully
and the other half
spending delicious time
while chastising myself
for being infatuated with
you
what you and i have isn't
real
an illusion that really
never meant to be
what i have at home is
so tangible-
him and i are an 'us'
while you and i could
never be a 'we'

i must go, i didn't
mean to come off like
a sappy song about
goodbyes
please don't follow
me out-
there's no need to
turn this already bad
night into an uglier
creature
i'm not going home
i'm going to find a
quiet place and
cry
