Distracted Dancer

Distracted Dancer

A Poem by Jacqueline

Distracted Dancer

the hot summer rain
shattered her skin like
little fingertips
wet was the flesh
that lied in the sun
on the soaked blanket

her name was Maria
hair like a silken doll
she danced for drunken
men
rum on their breath
and sin in their eyes

when the moon was aglow
Maria would take to the
sandy dance floor
her hips fornicated with
the drums
she closed her eyes and
wished she wasn't there

her daughter Sofia
meant the world to her
soon she would be home
and take in all the things
her 4 year old did with
Abuela

the beach became silent
when all the bums went home
to sleep
a drifter with cash in his
hands
demanded an encore

"I'm sorry, but I have to
get home."
Maria tried to explain
the drifter showed her some
pictures of her in the summer
rain
Maria's heart skipped a beat

that night Maria never made
it home
Sofia forever lost her mother
the beach became a place of
mourning
the moon refused to show

no one ever found Maria
she barely could find herself
the pictures landed in
sordid magazines
the money paid for all of Maria's
and her new lover's junkie fix...

tragic yet beautiful piece. I remember reading this when I first joined so i am not sure if i reviewed it before the "big loss." I thought it was interesting that I came across it again today. It is heartfelt and sad. I am not sure how to put it into words. I just really enjoyed it. thanks.
