An Answered Prayer

An Answered Prayer

A Poem by Jacqueline
"

My take on the adoption process

"

An Answered Prayer

tuck him in
give him a kiss
say a prayer
try not to cry
walk away from the doorway
and wait

the phone rings
news may go either way
try not to get your hopes
up
try not to worry
a smiling face comes home
from school
he got an A on his test
celebrate

visitors question your everyday
routine
don’t breakdown because there’s
lint on the table
answer questions
honestly
the suspense will be over
soon

gather your loved ones
it’s time for the moment of
truth
you love him so much
you just couldn’t help
yourself
the office is cold
beige walls aren’t
comforting
intimidating eyes bore into your
soul
words float into the air

“You may take William home.”

the chains of fear fall to the
ground
