A Sudden Darkness

A Sudden Darkness

A Poem by Mallory N. Young
"

This is what I somewhat saw and felt the first time I had a seizure when I was thirteen. It wasn't very cool at all.

"
Back at home
full from a day of turkey and family love
my mother makes me hot chocolate.
The cup is warm,
the promise of a glorious evening of football and excitement.
I am looking at the score
and then suddenly darkness.
I seem to wake up in a theater
of my own creation with a
blurry screen in front of me.
The image slowly clears
and it's my worried parents looking
down on me,
talking with silence.
I wanted to answer
and feel the fear
that is expected of suddenness
and the unknown.
But calmness and relaxation has come over me,
a sleepiness.
As I close my heavy eyes
I think, "If this is death, it's not so bad."
Then I awaken to concerned parental faces.
My body is numb, tingly,
with my hot chocolate
dripping on my pants.
