Chapter 12

One evening after class I was walking across campus. From a distance, I saw Alexia walking with another man. At the time I wished that I were him. I had to know what Alexia felt about me. I had an idea that would put Clancy to the test. So far all of the events that Clancy had written about had, in one way or another, have come true. All of these events could have, conceivably, been

coincidental. This next venture could not be mistaken as dumb luck. I wanted to know just what Alexia felt for me so I had Clancy begin writing:

Daniel was having difficulty understanding why Jane had this sudden interest in him.

"Could she have truly been interested in me or my new found money," Daniel thinks to himself.

"What would her thoughts tell me," Daniel dreamed, "if I could only read her mind."

Daniel sits down at his computer, but he is not very productive. He can't take his mind off of the idea of reading somebody's minds. How can his brain communicate with other brains? He remembers a class that he had on public speaking. The instructor made it clear that what a speaker says is only a small portion of what is communicated. Most of what is transmitted is done through gestures, body position, facial expression, etc. Then in the same breath Daniel

wonders, "Where do hunches come from? How can Beethoven create a symphony at the age of four? How do people get premonition?"

He walks around the room so that he can stretch.

"Perhaps I'll have to read her thought through her gestures," Daniel thinks to himself, "but her gestures seem positive. I just don't know."

Daniel's daydreaming is interrupted by a phone call from his boss.

"Hello?"

Daniel, this is Rashem. I want to make this quick. I need the Bear Account Report before tomorrow morning. I just found out that the Bear executives are planning to be at the presentation tomorrow. I need you to come in and finish it up so it will be ready."

"It's already done and sitting on your desk." Daniel tells him.

"Thank you so.....<crackle, crackle, crackle>   ...... sorry! I just went under a bridge. Thanks again. I'll see you tomorrow. Bye."

"Bye."

Daniel turns on a battery operated radio and walks out to the balcony for better reception. He hears the announcer say, "Welcome to tonight's show. This evening we are coming at you LIVE from Center Creek Palladium....."

Something stuck in Daniel's "...we are coming at you LIVE... LIVE... LIVE..."

Daniel thinks to himself, "This announcer is fifty miles away and yet he has the power to communicate a message to me and better yet, I have the power to receive his message."

"Of course!" Daniel thinks, "Radio waves. Wouldn't it be great to be able to send and receive thought waves just as radios do with radio waves."

The more Daniel thinks about it, the more it begins making sense. People have some sort of 'gut feeling' about a bad situations before it happens, or feel that something was wrong with a loved one hundreds of miles away. There must be a communication link that we do not know about.

Daniel becomes so wrapped up in his thoughts that he decides to take a walk in a near by wooded area to clear his mind. He comes to a clearing where a fire is left smoldering. It has been abandoned.

From the liquor bottles that are scattered around he can tell that this is the remains of a party site. With the contents are left in a liquor bottle, Daniel plans to extinguish the ashes. He stumbles losing his grip on the bottle. The bottle fall to the ground and breaks. Daniel picks up a hand full

of leaves that are soaked with the liquor and throws them into the ashes.

"Wush!!" the fire ignites even brighter. He begins kicking dirt on to the fire.

Daniel unknowingly inhales the smoke from the dwindling ashes. He becomes light headed and overcome with a multitude of inner feelings. His mind begins drifting in and out of his physical awareness. He steps away from the fire and inhale deeply the fresh air. He continues extinguishing the fire, then walks back home. Before reaching his apartment, he begins focusing on Jane. He gets the feeling of washing dishes. His hands feel warm and wet.

"What was that?" Daniel thinks to himself as he looks to his hands. He begins focusing again on what he is to do with Jane and how he is to read her gestures and facial expressions to find out her thoughts of him. In his focusing, he feel the urge to shut off a fire on a stove before the pot boils over.

"What is going on here?"

Daniel looks around to the trees that surround him. He notices birds flying from tree to tree. Through the trees he can see the street where he needs to be. Everything seems normal. He continues walking. As he does he once again concentrates on Jane. A very sad feeling comes over him. He shakes his head in disbelief. He feels that same feeling as when he comes out of a shallow dream. He reaches the street and everything appears to be normal. Near a tree trunk he sees a cat. Flashes of a lust to catch a sparrow overcome him. The cat turns to Daniel as a sparrow flies off from behind a tree.

"What was in that fire?" Daniel thinks to himself. "Those who were partying must have thrown their leftovers into it."

Daniel finds himself having more illusions when he focuses on people or animals. When he reaches his apartment, he focuses on just those things which ->he<- needs to do. In the shower he find himself thinking of Alexia again. Numbers and formulas pop into his thoughts as if he were trying the solve algebraic problems. Daniel decides to call Jane.

"Hello?" she says softly at the other end of the phone.

"Hi, Jane? This is Daniel."

"Is something wrong? It's almost ten o'clock."

"I'm sorry. I didn't know it was so late."

"That's okay, I was just working on my algebra over a hot cup of tea."

Daniel thought to himself, "That was the water on the stove and the algebra

that I was feeling."

"I didn't mean to disturb you," Daniel tells her.

"That's okay," she repeats, "I was going to quit soon anyway. I just saw this  movie tonight and it was ... 'Dove in Love', have you heard of it? It's good but really sad. I couldn't stop crying."

Daniel thinks to himself, "That was the sadness that I felt."

" I am," she continues, "...going to watch another movie to take my mind off of

it then, maybe go to sleep."

"Well you get back to what you were doing then. Good night, and I'll talk to

more later."

"Okay then, Good night."

"Good night."

Jane hangs up the phone wondering why Daniel called her in the first place. Daniel continues focusing on Alexia and as he does he receives feeling of himself in a questioning manner regarding the phone call. He keeps focusing. He receives thoughts of algebra. Before long he feel like turning off the lights and climbing into bed.

"Wait! What is this?" Daniel asks himself.

Daniel begins feeling lustful thoughts in a way that he has never experienced before. He sits in awe with this new feeling of pleasure. Then suddenly the thoughts are radically scattered.

"She's asleep!" Daniel thinks.

Unable to understand the thoughts that is being transmitting, Daniel decides to get a drink of Koolaid from the refrigerator. As he drinks the sugar solution, he feels the hallucinogens flush from his body. He once again focuses on Jane but this time he receives no unusual feelings. Exhausted from the day's discoveries, Daniel falls into a deep sleep.

Narrator: I stopped Clancy from writing as I became too exhausted to stay awake.

I had Clancy write of Daniel having difficulty understanding Jane’s motives just as I was. Could she have truly been interested in me or my new found money. What would her thoughts tell me if I could read thoughts as Daniel could?"

I sat down at my computer, but I was not very productive. I couldn't take my mind off of the idea of Daniel reading somebody's minds. How could his brain communicate with other brains. I knew of interpersonal skills because I wrote from my knowledge of those skills from my public speaking class.

And I, like Daniel, thought, "Perhaps I'll have to read her thoughts through her gestures, but her gestures seem positive. I just don't know."

This is where things really got weird. My thoughts were interrupted by a phone call from my boss, just like 'you know who'.

"Hello?"

Sam, this is Rashem. I want to make this quick. I need the Bear Account Report before tomorrow morning. I just found out that the Bear executives are planning to be at the presentation tomorrow. I need you to come in a finish it up so it will be ready."

"It's already done and sitting on your desk."

"Thank you so.....<crackle, crackle, crackle>   ...... sorry! I just went under a bridge. Thanks again. I'll see you tomorrow. Bye."

"Bye."

I opened the ledger and read along word for word what my boss had said and what Daniel's boss said. This was truly amazing.  I hung up the phone and did exactly as Daniel did. I turned on a battery operated radio and went to the balcony for better reception. I didn't have to realize the concept of radio wave as Daniel did because I already thought of it. I did feel the urge to clear my head so I decided take a walk in the wooded area near my apartment.

I came to the clearing where Daniel stood. A fire was smoldering. It had been abandoned.

From the liquor bottles that were scattered around I could tell that this was the remains of a party site. With the contents left in a liquor bottle, I did just as Daniel did. I took the bottle of liquor to extinguish the ashes. I stumbled losing my grip on the bottle.

"How convenient?" I thought to myself.

The bottle fell to the ground and broke. I picked handfuls of leaves that were soaked with the liquor and threw them into the ashes.

"Wush!!" the fire ignited even brighter. I began kicking dirt on to the fire.

I knowingly inhaled the smoke from the dwindling ashes. I became light headed and overcome with a multitude of inner feelings. My mind began drifting in and out of my physical awareness. I stepped away from the fire and inhaled deeply the fresh air. I continued extinguishing the fire, then walked back home. Before reaching my apartment, I began focusing on Alexia. I had the feeling of washing dishes. My hands felt warm and wet.

"It works!" I thought to myself as I looked to my hands.

I began focusing again on what I am to do with Alexia and how I am to read her gestures and facial expressions to find out her thoughts of me. In my focusing, I felt the urge to shut off a fire on a stove before the pot boiled over.

"How did I know that was going to happen? <grin>"

I looked around to the trees that surrounded me. I noticed birds flying from tree to tree. Through the trees I saw the street where he needs to be. Everything seemed as expected. I continued walking. As I did, I once again concentrated on Alexia. A very sad feeling came over me. I reached the street and everything appeared to be normal. Near a tree trunk I saw a cat. I wanted to catch a sparrow like you wouldn't believe. The cat turned to me as a sparrow flew off from behind a tree.

"That was good stuff in that fire?"

I found myself having more illusions when I focuses on people or animals. When I reached my apartment I focused on just those things that I needed to. In the shower, I found myself thinking of Alexia again. Numbers and formulas popped into my head as if I were trying the solve algebraic  problems.

I decided to follow Daniel's lead and call Alexia.

"Hello?" she said softly at the other end of the phone.

"Hi, Alexia? This is Sam."

"Is something wrong? It's almost ten o'clock."

"I'm sorry. I didn't know it was so late," I said while reading along in the ledger.

"That's okay, I was just working on my algebra over a hot cup of tea."

I thought to myself, "This works so great... YES!"

"I didn't mean to disturb you," I told her.

"That's okay," she repeated, "I was going to quit soon anyway. I just saw this movie tonight and it was ... 'Dove in Love', have you heard of it? It's good but really sad. I couldn't stop crying."

I thought to myself, "I can't wait!!!!!"

" I am," she continues, "...going to watch another movie to take my mind off of it then, maybe go to sleep."

"Well you get back to what you were doing then. Good night, and I'll talk to you more later."

"Okay then, Good night."

"Good night."

Alexia hung up the phone wondering why I called her in the first place. Just as Daniel did, I continued focusing on Alexia and as I did I received feeling of myself in a questioning manner regarding the phone call. I kept focusing. I received thoughts of algebra. Before long I felt like turning off the lights and climbing into bed.

"Wait! So this is what 'IT' feels like!!!"

I began feeling the lustful feelings that, up until now, have been reserved for women. I sat in awe with this new feeling of pleasure. Then suddenly her thoughts were radically scattered.

"She's asleep!"

Unable to understand the thought that were transmitted, I decided to get a drink of Koolaid from the refrigerator. As I drank the sugar solution, I could feel the hallucinogens flush from my body. I once again focused on Alexia but this time I received no unusual feelings. Exhausted from the day's discoveries, I fell into a deep sleep.
