Silence

Silence

A Poem by Kimberly "Melody" Carney

sometimes it’s good to just listen and set someone else free

Silence

It’s the one thing that does so much,

by doing nothing at all.

We sit and watch the time go by,

love ones we never call.

Its strength can be a double edge sword,

when it’s used right or wrong.

Sometimes its best, say nothing at all,

for words can be so strong.

The power of the tongue, unnoticed.

It can break bonds, setting free.

Its power should be one revered,

rooted like an oak tree.

Know it has the power to kill,

a love that once was strong.

Know it has the power to heal,

If you think hard and long.

Within it you can find wisdom

or it can break you down.

How will you choose to use this gift?

Create a smile or a frown?

The thought I know seems so simple,

choosing once not to speak.

 Understand the power of voice,

your mind it’s not so bleak.

There are something’s that have  power,

far beyond what we see.

Sometimes it’s good to just listen,

and set someone else free.

Melody, this is one of the best poems i've ever read here at Writer's Cafe. It denotes melodious and quite cryptic unraveling of the power of silence and its mortifying qualities. My mind returns to Ronan Keating's song "When you say nothing at all" and back to what your lovely poem says. However, you have assessed the prevalence of silence. Both the positive and negative points of silence has been portrayed here which evokes suspense and admiration. With the distinction between silence and uttering has been shown here subtly, i must say you've done a wonderful job!

Your poem highlights the power of our tongue to build up or destroy, to cause joy or sadness. The last verse has "something's" that might be changed to 'some things'. Your poem is interesting and thought-provoking.

Beautiful. Silence is not treasured enough, yet most times it is impossible to sit comfortably surrounded by it. Great write. I love this one.
