Free Falling

Free Falling

A Poem by Kimberly "Melody" Carney

The edge of the mountain I stand

Close my eyes and breathe in

Release my mind and then free fall

The fear forces a grin

My stomach turns from adrenaline

Force takes my breath away

Images of rocks pass me by

Living only for today

The ground comes into full focus

My eyes seal tight from fear

Letting go of all that binds me

As the end is drawn near

One swift gasp of my shallow breath

I release what taunts me

I open my eyes on the cliff side

Wild smile from what I see

A tango dance with a nightmare

Just the cliff side and me

I gaze over the edge and see

What parts I left of me

Now satisfied with what I’ve done

I return to my car

A voice echoes from the cliff side

No matter where you go…

…there you are.

I enjoyed this poem. In my young days. I was a free climber. I free climbed most of the California coastline to Washington state. Did some climbing in Asia, Europe and South America. The poem reminded me of standing on hills and mountains realizing how small I really was.

Good to be with the hawk and the eagle. Dance with the wind on lonely places. Thank you for the outstanding poem.

An interesting poem with some unusual observations. The last line reminds me of one from an old sci-fi cult movie, 'Buckaroo Bonsai'. Your scene descriptions are very vivid and clear.
