To Mom, I Love You, January, 2010

A Poem by Michael McLaughlin

To Mom, I Love You, January, 2010

I look into her eyes,
Deep blue and loving still,
But cannot find the spark,
Of her unbending will.

She knows not who I am,
But knows that I am hers,
Her strong and certain mind,
Now feeble and unsure.

She lifts a fragile hand,
To brush along my cheek,
I hold her other hand,
And watch her strain to speak.

Dependent for all care,
Unable to respond,
But still her gentle smile,
Reveals her loving bond.

Her love is in the air,
A precious, guiding light,
It frightens the dismay,
Of fast approaching night.

Her strength held me upright,
Throughout so many years,
Just memories remain,
Through eyes swollen with tears.
