DylanA Story by Theo Magee
The glare produced by the headlights was blinding. I can only recall pieces of what happened last night. The last thing that is clear is driving on the backroads with Dylan in the passenger seat of my old rusted up 1989 red Dodge Ram pickup truck. Him singing along to whatever country song was on the radio at the time trying to get me to sing along and let go of what was on my mind. He had that mischievous look in his eye and you instantaneously knew he had something up his sleeve and was about to put it into play. I turn to warn him to not even think about it just enjoy the night and don’t start trouble. Bright lights flashed across my peripheral vision causing me to look back to the road just in time to see the car heading straight for us. I remember jerking the wheel to the right and veering off the road, but there is where it gets a bit hazy. I recall waking up I see the tree that crushed the front of my truck like a scrapped-up ball of paper. There is blood dripping and rolling down my face, my torso and pooling in my lap, but I could’ve cared less as long as he was okay. I slowly turn my head to my right to check in on Dylan to calm the anxiety and dread building in the pit of my stomach. I remember pleading with God please don’t let him be hurt. I remember the panic when he wasn’t there. Screaming out his name hoping he would respond that he would still be okay. I received no response. I turned back to the windshield trying to assess the damage to the truck, that’s when I spotted him sprawled out in all these weird angles on the crunched-up hood. My first instinct was to run to him, but I quickly learned that wasn’t possible that my legs were pinned under the steering wheel and I couldn’t feel them at all but that wasn’t important to me getting to Dylan was the most important thing. I scream his name again only it didn’t come out. The terror and dread were creeping its way up my throat paralyzing my vocal cords. All I could muster has a silent scream releasing the floodgates of all the tears welling up in my eyes. I couldn’t take my eyes of his body it appeared so stiff and still the amount of fluid that I could only assume was blood surround and soak into his hair, his white t-shirt, and blue jeans. That’s when my stomach fully dropped, my brain screaming he can’t be dead he was so full of life he had an amazing future. I won’t let it happen he needed to be alive I pledged as if it was up to me. A sense of peace and black slowly closed in from all sides of my vision as if it was calling to me to come explore this new place and feeling.
Chapter 2
The world that I had grown to know had disappeared. The weight of my body seemed to disappear. Let me clarify what I mean by that the weight of my body disappeared you felt like you where submerged in a large body of water you felt weightless. If you jumped there was no telling when you would land. It was mystifying you didn’t feel constrained to your own body you were completely free the barriers were gone the pain was gone. You feel no concept of time I have no clue how long I was there or how long I would be where ever this actually was. This place had a sense of silence. Typically silence makes me nervous, however one felt different for some reason I was completely comfortable. The silence didn’t last forever though all around me suddenly changed there was beeping, an electronical buzzing. I began spinning in circles to see if I could see anything that would produce such a sound. I got to about 90 degrees when I felt it a pain spreading through my chest causing me to drop to my knees the pain dispersed after a few moments only to return in what I assume was only a few moments later stronger than the last. No longer was there any sense of silence but the world was filled with sounds of beeping, machines humming, and the squeaking of shoes against a tile floor.
