Mami-Water

Mami-Water

A Poem by Kpoh

Mami-Water

Half-human, half-fish

Mermaid with the face of an angel

And diabolical as Lucifer

From waist up

A damsel most magnificent

From long tail to waist

Wily fish indwelling the deepest seas

She appears when summoned

By the incantations and magical shenanigans

Of those with hearts of iron

Benefactress to the brave and the greedy

Deceiver of the lazy and the slothful

Those who seek to acquire wealth absent labor

Terrifying fish made like unto woman

Rendering insane those unable to look upon her beauty

Sea goddess of variable temper

Who treats with contemn those lacking in fortitude

And destroys they who with temerity seek her favors

To invoke Mam-Water's presence is no mean feat

Incantation follows tireless incantation

On dark bleak nights; nothing moving; nought stirring

'Pon the the shores of deserted beaches

Or in a glass filled with water

Determined adherents with candles at the ready

Chant and in trepidation await

The appearance of the mysterious mermaid

Who would oft materialize from the womb of unrighteous waves

Like an apparition from one's imagination awoken

Or emanate sudden in the glass for her manifestation prepared

To prosper or curse

They who sought her astral presence

I know not the origin of this sorcerors' apprentice

Real or imagined she remains with two;

They who are by fear rendered cryptic and sequester that which they saw

Or those by an encounter with the nypmh deranged forever
