This One's For You Papa

This One's For You Papa

A Poem by Megan Skaff

I am sitting on the lake shore, pondering the events of the past year.
Flashbacks of that day run through my mind, the day you left me and Max behind.
Suddenly, I'm not so afraid anymore. I don't feel so alone. It's starting to get easier.
I watch as Max runs across the sand into the tides.
He is excited, excited for the tides to suck him into the waters and excited for them to bring him back to shore.
My eyes beam as he runs towards me with his toy, like finding it in the waters made all of his dreams come true.
I remember the day we lost you, Max was broken.
I remember the way he would lay around, and even the lake couldn't cheer him up.
Time has a way of healing us all though, Papa. And it's crazy how Max has healed. It's crazy how I have healed.
I see those huge bright, sparkling eyes and I can't help but smile, something I never thought I'd do again.
We may never fully recover from that day, but we have each other now, we're not so alone.
I have you to thank for that.
