Freedom is the Smell of the Rain

Freedom is the Smell of the Rain

A Poem by mkogrodnik

26 years old
the girl walks
the 10 blocks home
in the rain

26 years old
and she hates her job
but now she can rest
so why complain

26 years old
and NYC is having a drought
and she just dumped her boyfriend
lately she's been feeling pain

26 years old
and the air smells clean
and her shoes are soaked
but she jumps in another puddle
to settle the fight
in her brain

26 years old
and for a moment she felt 16
maybe younger

26 years old
and she laughed to herself outloud
and felt happy she did
she felt free
and so did the rain.

As a slight matter of coincidence, I also got caught out in the rain today. It really does make you feel younger when you have a few moments just to splash around in puddles and for a few seconds forget all the complicated parts of being an adult. It's nice how you turned what could be a very unpleasant experience, walking home in the rain, into a beautiful, whimsical read.
