What If

What If

A Poem by Mito

What if...

Two words that seem so insignificant,
but require volumes for a response;
the possiblities abound

When they are submerged in a memory,
we are instantly taken to a solitary place in our minds.
A place that only we hold the key;
and seem to visit only in those few fleeting moments before sleep.

The memories seem to light the paths that we choose to trod.
Both good and bad, we can still get lost from time to time;
as we gaze on that which is reflected upon our inward eye.

Though we yearn for the bliss and freedom of young love
and curse the restraints and bindings of somber regret;
that persistant question lingers.

Always blaming ourselves by answering...
"I should have been there for him," or maybe "I could have prayed harder;"
perhaps, "I should have said, 'I love you', more often."

We label past mistakes as experience or lessons learned;
but regrets meet us at every door.

For man to say that he has no regrets in life is to deny ever being human.
It is an unquenchable hunger that we have;
and for some it is a necessity of healing, for both the mind and soul,
to ask...

WHAT IF...

A very well written poem. Seems there always comes a time in our lives we do ask the question "What if?" I never thought of it as part of being human before. When my huband died I went through those questions, also when I lost my son... I honestly think you are right. Thank you for sharing this poem. Debileah
