Chasing Calliope

Chasing Calliope

A Poem by Kristina Moulaison

The humming in her ear, I'm not sure it's working

she knows the love-hate mantra I'm dealing with

knows I will go away, the rattling will stop in time

if only she ignores the voices, the mournful words

long enough to send me adrift,

back to a sea of wandering

She has yet to note that I have packed for a long journey

that pacing the halls and rapping on doors all day

is to be part of my charm, that I will smoke her out

if I have to, hang her in a basket around my neck

and lull her with my flute until she, swaying appears

I mean to make her dance, strip each layer until she is bare

against the bedpost, poised for a lover's inspection

she can cower in darkness with regret, so long as she sings

or wales on pitch, and I can capture her song on parchment

weave the tapestries of her longing

and lock them tight in alabaster jars

I will haunt this place until she gives me what I want...

Those damned muses! They are so independent! You'd think they wrote the damn words!

I write. Read me. We don't read and write poetry because it's cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, la.. more..
