While still debating what to say to my mom I heard the doorbell downstairs. Boy, Jerry must have ran. I walked down, and saw mom at the door. “It’s for you dear, it’s Jerry.” She walked past me and back into the kitchen.
I turned to Jerry, “hi! Come on, I’ll show you the car.” I pushed past him to outside and down the porch. I talked to him on the way to the garage, “sorry about my mom, she’s not feeling well.”
“That’s ok, I understand. Wow! That is an awesome car!” Jerry exclaimed when I snapped on the garage light. He checked over everything, nodding once-in-awhile and talking to himself. When he was done we walked back up to the porch.
“Beautiful night,” I said as I sat down on the swing.
“Yeah, it is.” Jerry sat down next to me. “Um, there was something I wanted to ask you. It’s about-“
Mom called from inside the house, “Bebe! Phone!”
I got out of the swing, “sorry! I’ll be right back.” I told Jerry. “Who is it mom?” I asked when I reached the kitchen.
“It’s that Buff again,” she said handing me the phone. I rolled my eyes and took it.
“Hello?” I asked walking into the living room.
“Hi Bebe! What’s up?” Biff asked cheerily.
“Not too much, I just finished showing Jerry my new car.”
There was a pause at the other end, “Oh yeah? You drove over to show him? That’s cool.”
“Actually, he came over and I showed him. We just got back from the garage and were sitting on the porch when you called.” I explained.
Another pause. “Oh. Well I wanted to ask you something. Do you have a minute more?”
Uh oh, now he had something to ask too? “Um, sure. What is it?”
Just then Jerry came into the room and mouthed the words, “who is it?”
I mouthed back, “Biff.”
Jerry frowned. “Biff you still there? You said you wanted to ask me something.” I asked.
“Oh yeah. Well, the spring dance is coming up and I wanted to know if you would like to go with me.”
I sucked in my breath, what was I supposed to say? I had a feeling Jerry was going to ask the same question. “Um, can I think about it and then call you back?” I didn’t know what else to say. “I just want to make sure it’s okay with my mom and also if I can go that night.”
“Oh, yeah sure. That’s fine I guess.” Biff said, trying to hide disappointment.
“Great, I’ll tell you after I think it over. Bye.” I hung up and let out my breath.
“What did Biff want?” I completely forgot Jerry was still in the room.
I played with the phone. “Well, he- uh-”
“Something about the dance?” Jerry paused for a minute, “well I’d better get going. I’ve got some homework left to finish.” He started walking towards the doorway.
I watched in complete shock as Jerry walked out the door. “I’d go after him Bebe.” I turned around, my mom was standing in the kitchen doorway. I nodded and took off.
“Jerry wait!” I yelled, racing after him. “Please Jerry! Wait!” he stopped and waited for me. I ran up to him, “Jerry please don’t just walk away like that.” I begged.
“I don’t have anything to say, and I need to get home.” Jerry said with slight stiffness.
“But you were going to ask me something!” I said with a catch in my voice. “What was it?”
Jerry studied my face for a second and his expression became more relaxed. “Alright, well I was going to ask you to the dance, but I see you already have a date.” He turned on his heel and left me standing in the middle of the sidewalk. Still in a shock, I sank to the ground and watched him walk away.
Now what do I do!
-I’m not sure, but he’s right. Until you turn down Biff it’s not right for him to ask you.-
But I don’t know! I don’ want to hurt Biff, or anyone. I’m so confused.
I stayed there and rocked back and forth, thinking of an answer until my mom came and got me. I was so tired and worried that I went straight to bed without dinner.
The whole week went by in a blur. Vadia now ignored me anyways so she wasn’t part of my worries at the moment. So I hung out with Melcia mostly and avoided the boys, except Seth, as much as possible. Kyle apparently never knew that Biff had asked me because he asked me the next day. I decided to tell Seth about Cory coming though, so he wouldn’t have a chance to ask me too. He got a little excited about that and told me that he couldn’t get a date for the dance and asked if I thought Cory would consider going with him. I knew she would, but just in case, I told him I’d find out for him.
Friday afternoon came. My mom and I met Cory at the airport then drove home. I told her about Seth’s offer.
“That would be awesome! After I meet him and the others I’ll tell you-“ My face fell at her words. “What’s wrong Bebe?”
“I can’t introduce you to the others, only Seth.” I explained.
Beth stared at me for a second, “well why not?”
I told her about the problem, “I’m not going to the dance on Tuesday. I’ll just stay home.”
“I won’t go, if you don’t.” Cory stated.
“You have to go, Seth is looking forward to it so much. I’ve been thinking about this whole mess and I’m going to call them and tell them that I can’t go. That way they can still get dates, and go to the dance.”
Cory saw my determined face and dropped the subject. We met Seth later, and he and she hit it off instantly. She told him she’d love to go to the dance with him and they made plans.
Over the weekend I invited Melcia over. She hadn’t been asked to the dance by anyone yet and was still hoping. All three of us watched movies, went to the mall and to dinner. We had an all out party. I had called Kyle and Biff and turned them down. I knew they were disappointed in me, but I had confidence that they’d find dates.
Tuesday arrived and Melcia, Beth, and I spent the day trying hair styles. First Melcia and I worked on Cory, then Cory and I worked on Melcia. As I was busy helping with Melcia’s hair her cell phone rang. I grabbed it and handed it to Melcia.
“Hello?...Yes. Really?....Oh wow! Yes, that’s would be great! Thanks!...ok...yes...all right, bye!” Melcia hung up the phone and squealed. “Guess who that was!”
Cory and I looked at each other, then at her. “Who?” We said in the same breath.
“It was Kyle! He asked me to the dance!” Cory and Melcia began dancing around the room, I sat on the bed and watched.
Well, now I know Kyle found a date.
-Yes, but are you okay with that?-
I think so. I’m happy for Melcia, I know she likes Kyle.
-Yes, but now you know that she is Kyle’s date for tonight, and it’ll be prying at your mind.-
At least I got away from the distractions, you were right all along. From now on I stay away from them, and that’s a promise.
“Bebe?” I looked up at Melcia and Cory.
“Yes?”
“Are you all right?” Melcia asked.
I saw her frown and knew she was really worried. I smiled brightly, “I’m fine, just thinking how we could do your hair.” I stood up, went back over to the chair by the mirror, and patted it. “Come on, we’ve got to make your hair fabulous for Kyle.”
Melcia smiled and sat back down in the chair, we spent the next hour pinning her hair up, then undoing it then putting it back up.
