The Laugh

The Laugh

A Poem by Patty Neff

Have you ever heard a funny joke that made you grin

You know that's when your mouth turns up when it sits on your chin

Then before you know it your grin turns into a giggle

And makes you feel like you want to squirm and wiggle

Next you try to hold your breath cause you don't know what to do

But then the giggle bursts into laughter and you start to turn blue

Big tears roll down your face and drip on the ground

You can't stop laughing and everyone looks at you with a frown

But your having too much fun to care who is looking on

Besides if they knew your joke they would laugh till dawn

And just when you think you can't laugh anymore

You fall down laughing and roll around on the floor

Then like it came, you begin to calm down

You begin to stop laughing and get off of the ground

You wipe your face and dry your tears

But you still have a little giggle that rings in your ears

Then the giggle turns into a grin which is where you were before

And you race out of the room and head straight for the door

To find someone else to tell that same joke and begin

To grin, giggle, and laugh all over again

"The Height of the Ridiculous" by Oliver Wendell Holmes is what this reminds me of which ends 'and since, I never dare to write as funny as I can.'
