soul wanderer

soul wanderer

A Poem by hanzabonanza

I walked, hands outstretched

through a chasm so tall and vast

so full of life

that even the rocks whispered

their secret messages to each other

and the water chirped in reply

I cannot begin to describe that river

at times deep and threatening

swirling and tugging my ankles

other times warm and playful

in harmony with my steps

all the while reflecting

the shard of electric blue above

only the wetness on my skin

its cold seeping into my bones

telling me I wasn’t dreaming

we lost our breath

drowning nerves completely

descending the waterfall

relinquishing control for a higher cause

regretful, the moment gone too soon

in the eyes of the valley

I was a mere speck

no greater or lesser than the tiny crab

which scuttled from our reach

or the birds circling far above

or the fish reluctantly sharing their home

I let myself be carried

downstream, in the river’s tight hold

sweeping past ancient rocks

who looked on stony faced

when we emerged at last

as if having found a wonderful secret

blinking in the bright sunlight

we staggered the last few metres

of the riverbed

unable to tear our eyes away

from the view that we left behind

I will return there when I sleep tonight

revisiting that strange unearthly place

knowing it to be a true dream

as it could never compare to

the reality I saw with my own eyes
