stagger-through

stagger-through

A Poem by hanzabonanza

           there is always a somebody

partner is more hopeful

non-gender specific

but still committed no less

husband

well forget it

better luck banging your head

on a brick wall

that fateful ring!

boyfriend

a few degrees down

the relationship Richter scale

occasionally luck is a lady

but mostly not

you think you’re getting somewhere

when the familiar bombshell’s dropped

I’ve got someone

we’re together

seeing each other

all packaged and

tied together in a neat bow

you kid yourself

that’s not what you want

but it’s all a lie

you need a co-conspirator

comrade

to share yourself with

will you alway be roaming

peeking in at lit windows at night

wondering what it feels like

to be wanted?

I'm smiling at the co-conspirator .. thinking how many partners , stand there, arms folded , heads shaking .. I want someone who is right by my side, big silly grin and all ..

I feel that none of the options presented here sound particularly attractive. This piece really shows them all simply for what they are and not viewed through the proverbial rose-tinted glasses. The words are licked with a caustic varnish of irony. The kind of expression which so many people are apt to pigeon-hole as 'cynical'. For me, though, cynicism is just another word for being realistic.
I think this opens the eyes of blithe optimism and exposes the cool clarity of what "being with someone" really amounts to. Love is somewhere in there, inevitably, I suppose, but there's really more to it than that. Something far more practical, like selfishness perhaps..? I think that lies deep down -and mostly denied- at the bottom of everything in life, if one is absolutely honest and literal in terms of what that means. And, as the last stanza implies, we may never be wholly satisfied.
A real 'kitchen-sink' kind of grit in this poem; a tough sense of truth, and philosophical intelligence in shades of grey.

love this intricate weaving~ on one hand especially so because I understand it intimately~ on another because the strings you connect here are poignant beyond measure~
