mundanity

A Poem by hanzabonanza

between birthdays and christmas

holidays long to come

no paralyzing exam stress

nor good news euphoria

when the trail runs cold

and the phone clicks off

and you’re left wondering

where the hell everyone went

when love is but a memory

the dull sick ache faded away

with only an infrequent clench

to relight the flame

turning from hand-holding couples

not jealous, nor bitter or disgusted

just finally fitting in too easily

to the bracket of ‘single’

2007 became 2010 without a thought

the years selfishly eaten up

after usage, discarded in life’s bin

and the tick of your watch bothers you

more than the lack of post in the door

but really the explanations get to you:

no its not like being vegetarian

I can have some nuts

      I was raised that way

thats just the way they are

     yes I understand the purpose

yes I can love,

          be loved,

             make love

just give me a goddam chance

to get used to the waiting

for the unknown

for the future

how can I tell if it passed by

without a whisper

a word

a smile
