black sands

black sands

A Poem by hanzabonanza

in an age past

I would have written you letters

with a glistening ink

on curling parchment

closed with my seal

then delivered on horseback

through the night

passed with a secret signal

from a trusted soul

now I have no such luxuries

our modern technology

only restricting me more

but what I have left

pours forth from the source

of my emotions

a stream of words tumbling

onto this page here

and I know out there

somewhere

you will read them

blindly unaware

maybe they can rouse you

from slumber

your mind leaping like a bolt

the realisation that the ‘you’

I pine, cry and burn for

is in fact yourself

could you look me in the eye

and tell me the truth?

how can it be

that a person can have no idea

of the value of their life

to another

that their very existence

even miles away

can fuel someone

to go on breathing

and face their absence alone

it’s a strange kind of madness

intoxicating and wonderful

perverse and dark

so very suited

to the two of us

your voice is tinny

down the phone

I hold back tears

as the line breaks up

at not being able

to hear its infinite beauty

in the flesh
