Planet

A Story by Jennifer
"

A story I believe my stepdad once told me. Also, under construction.

"

For years we have studied what the earth is made of. What makes the planet tic? Everything is based on theory. According to science, the lava flows beneath.

Plates in the earth move and cause the ground to shake. Volcanoes erupt and spew lava. In the time ahead, we would be sadly mistaken. Theory does not always mean it is a fact.

NASA watches the sky. They watch the stars, sun, and planets. They watch for meteors that collide with planets that could collide with ours. They listen to the astronaut wandering through space.

They are a quiet group of star gazers. Just like a fisherman waiting for a bite. Every once in a while a voice would crackle from the universe. The voices mutter about their condition and where they are at. The spacemen were on a mission to Pluto.

The trip seemed to go on for an eternity. Then finally some news is heard.

“There doesn’t seem to be a planet here,” the voice crackled.

Everyone looked at each other with surprise.

After a dead silence, “Do you copy?”

The silence remained. They should have reached their destination to Pluto. A planet cannot just vanish.

The astronauts arrived home discouraged. Pluto was present before. Where did it go? The only thing that was found on their journey was the remains of a satellite.

It was hard to say if it was destroyed by a meteor. There was some footage that was recovered. There was some activity on the planet.

A volcano slowly emerged from the ground. Smoke poured out of the top.  Then fire shot out from the opening. The fire kept on going higher and higher. Then a light blue snout emerged from underneath the fire.

The volcano crumbled. The snout grew longer. Then the picture turned to white noise.

In the deserts of the Middle East, are people who look for land mines. They use a device like a sonogram. The device enables them to virtually to have X-Ray vision. With this device they started to search old battlefields across the world.

They search for clues of what happened when their ancestors walked the planet. The need to see better caused a stronger device to be made. These were stronger than ever before.

All around the world, missing people were found. To lose someone in the woods became nearly impossible. If they were to look at the Earth’s core, it could probably be done.

One person conducting a search went deep into the forest. Something didn’t appear right. The detail of what was underground became detailed. He nearly dropped his equipment and ran.

“I think I found something!” he hollered.

Someone else yelled, “Then put a marker by it!”

“This is an extraordinary find! It’s not even part of the search,” he started to trail on what he was going to say. It was irrelevant to the search.

His friend walked over to where he was. She looked at the monitor on the detector.

“Oh my, God,” she touched the screen. “What is that? That looks like a dinosaur.”

“It’s intact,” he said. He moved the detector around a little bit further. The shapes of wings appear. “I amped up the power a bit. I was trying to get a better look at the area.”

His friend smiled. She looked back at the crowd, “Hey, he found a dinosaur!”

The rest of the crowd dropped what they were doing and came over for a look.

“That’s huge!” another said. “How come I can’t see that with mine?”

He pointed to the device, “You have to turn it up higher. This is on the highest setting it can go to.”

The find was brought to a paleontologist. The paleontologist determined that it may be a pterodactyl.  The dinosaur was trapped further in the Earth than usual. It was not just any ordinary fossil.

All researchers imaginable had shown up to the site. They watched the area intently with the strong metal detectors. To dig up the dinosaur would be impossible. They looked for ways to dig it up. The monitors remained stationary where they could see the pterodactyl.

Then one day someone watching the monitor saw a wing move. Was a live dinosaur found? The creature rolled to the side. All that would be seen was a scaly underbelly.

The individual shouted, “The dinosaur moved!”

If only people knew the information that is withheld from the general public. All the wondrous things that would be known. There would be more things that we would be better prepared for.  All of the believers would stop wondering. All of the skeptics would be brought to a stand still.

Astronauts are one of our only witnesses. They can see things outside of Earth that we can’t.

There were two astronauts traveling in space. They were headed to Saturn. A new model of spacecraft was made. It was being driven on a test run. It was a faster and more advanced spacecraft. In the cockpit they sat, watching the space debris float by. They listened to the eerie silence of outer space.

Above them a ghostlike figure passed above them. They jumped up from their seats. They did a double take at the ghostly giant. Or was it a cloud?

The form looked like a jelly fish at first. The ghost had an angelic look. The ghost circled the craft. The longer they watched the more the form took shape. The appearance became a familiar mythical creature.

It was a giant, white dragon. The dragon floated around the spaceship with curiosity. Then the dragon drifted far away. The astronauts sat back in their seats with astonishment.

Not too long after the dragon sighting they made it to Saturn. The whole sensation was a surreal dream feeling. They decided to carry on. The trip came to an abrupt stop at a familiar planet. They landed on Pluto.

The world at home was under the impression that Pluto was destroyed. Perhaps a different planet had been discovered. It was time to go back home. On the way back home they stopped by Jupiter.

Cracks were traveling around the planet at unusually high speeds. The astronauts took footage and sent it to NASA. As the live footage was sent, the cracks grew wider. NASA warned them of the possible danger and to leave.

Slowly, the two went further away from the planet. A beast started to emerge from Jupiter. A lizard head and legs stretched from beneath the ground. Pieces of the planet begin to crumble and float away. Wings emerged from the surface.

The wings spread and the body stretched. As for Jupiter, the planet was annihilated. The creature waved its wings and flew away. The astronauts quickly went back to Earth. With them was the whole entire footage. The planets that were looked at were eggs. The planets in the solar system were eggs.

Like a cult, the word spread like flood water. Every single scientist gathered together. With every discovery that had been occurring, they found that they were on an egg.

How long would it be until it was hatched? How would they know if the egg would hatch? The incubation period of a dragon was unknown. Especially, one of this size. It was too hard to know when Earth would hatch. As more planets hatched the quicker the answer came.

A plan was devised to find life outside of the galaxy. Everyone had to be evacuated from the solar system.

New space crafts were built. New homes were built inside these crafts. All around the globe, nothing else was being done except for making a new home. Something was being made to fit as many people as possible.

Astronauts left on a journey to find a new planet. The other planets nearby were completely out of the question.

Earth watched all of the astronauts take off without them. They remained scared and clutching their little ones. Quickly, they went back to work on their new homes.

The world trembled at their feet.  People in fact were walking on an egg. Faster they worked away on the spacecrafts.

Spherical steel shuttles were being built. Enough to travel long distances. Resources to sustain the living in case no planet was found.

Astronauts from around the world went in all different directions. Whenever another planet was found, it was another dragon eggs. They reached the end of the galaxy. Concern overwhelmed their minds. What would happen if they went past that new barrier?

One ship was watching the status of Earth. The situation was getting worse. Anxious, the shipped crossed the barrier of the galaxy. The other ships stayed and watched for a few minutes. Nothing happened to the other party. Soon, they followed. Further and further into eternity they went.

Behind the ships was a giant nest. A galaxy that was a nest of dragon eggs. Flying around the nest were giant dragons.

The journey went on. A planet was finally found where life could go on. Most shuttles headed back to home. A new life was to begin. Upon arrival was nearly a shocking scene. Earth was no longer there. All that remained were pods that people had built.

The astronauts led the pods away from the scene. The pods were led out of the galaxy and to their new home. Everyone looked in bewilderment at the nest that they were living in.

Reluctantly, the new arrivals stepped onto the new soil. The once earthlings had moved to another planet.

I enjoyed Rockys Story. Your write is good and entertained me as I thought about where the story was leading. I have to admit It caught me off guard about the Pluto conspiracy but I found it very interesting.

If you would like more feedback on this I would be glad to give you more...or you could talk to Mark a talented editor and post it in this group so that you could get more direction with thought...

Lots of ideas going on. This could benefit from combing and a rewrite. You have a lovely swift style, and this story may be more convincing with some of the continuity straightened out. I love the mischief in your imagination. I'm sure you are a great teller of tall stories!

wonderfully retold. There is always an added element of magic in being able to capture an oral story on paper, or pc. Vivid imagery in this one. Captivating and warm. Nicely done.
