Calling the shots

"

President Lincoln, the president who abolished slavery. He would be the person to think that he wouldn't be against religious rights. He was not very fond of Mormons, as many people are not.

At this time people did not like Mormons because of polygamy. Then and even today, people find polygamy immoral. Of course, today people frown upon it not only because of moral issues but also financial reasons.

Before the battle at Bear River, the Civil War had broke out. There was correspondence heading out west. The Shoshone were attacking the Pony Express. Not only that emigrants were being attacked to. The Meadow Creek Massacre happened and this was still fresh on the governments mind when the Mormons were declaring diplomacy to the United States.

President Lincoln had grown tired of not being able to send important information and was also under the impression that the Mormons were bringing on the attacks by the Shoshone. He sent Lt. Connor and troops to Idaho. The troops were to prevent any further happenings on the trail to the west. They were there to bring the attacks to an end.
