The Forgotten Ancestors

The Forgotten Ancestors

A Chapter by Jennifer
"

I am melancholy.

"
Just when we think that the oldest mummy has been found, another older one is discovered. I think there is a reason for this. I think there is a reason why teenagers are traveling to Syria and Iraq to join the terrorist groups. I think that we have forgotten the importance of respect and history.
I think about the fact that we do not know exactly where we are from and who our ancestors were. We may know some information. I know little about my family.Do I know anything about the Berglunds other than the fact that they are from Sweden? No, not really. I would like to know. Heck, I would like to know more about Sweden. I only know about Greta Garbo, ABBA, and Ace of Base.
I am certain that there are some ancient artifacts in Sweden, Norway, England, and Germany. If these artifacts exist and my ancestors worshiped them, I am certainly worshiping them. I would would assume that my ancestors did because no matter where you look on this planet there are relics, signs of ancient civilizations, and indigenous tribes.
Not all tribes have deities to worship, but my point is we do not know anything about our ancestors. We do not know exactly how long we have been here. If we cannot figure out how exactly what made the dinosaurs extinct, how would we know?
It is virtually impossible to teach all of the historical events because school only goes on for so long. Schools teach the same thing every year.
The other problem is that there are people who live to destroy anything from the past. I think that this destruction is part of the reasons why we forget. I think that it proves that someone has no respect for their elders. They are disrespecting everyone.
As though Utu was being worshiped, ISIS destroyed ancient Mesopotamian artifacts. We know that the gods are not real. It's not like anyone is making a shrine to the ancient gods and worshiping them. That is ludicrous.
When vandals looted the museums in Egypt, I found it symbolic. It has happened in ancient times. When ISIS did it, it was childish and cowardly.
Mesopotamia does not exist anymore. Iraqis know that the gods are not real. Why should ISIS feel so intimidated by a statue?
As I read the articles, I begin to realize this is why we do not know where we are from. Why would one destroy a past that people can identify with? All the people are going to have are stories from the past and pictures on the Internet.
