Final Words

A Chapter by Mary Something--Or--Other

Will my last chapter be filled with death?

I awoke in the light of the new day, finding that Shane was not in my arms. Instead she was stilling up beside me, wearing only a t-shirt and night pants. I reached up and stroked her shoulder. “Darling, what is it?”

“We didn’t use protection,” she said quietly.

I sighed, turning my rolling over to face the window. “You’re not pregnant, Shane.”

Somehow, Shane understood everything about me. I’m not sure what it was about her, but she did, and she understood this. She lied back down, wrapping her arms around my shoulders from behind. “Cal, it’s alright.”

“No, it’s not!” I shouted, my anger pouring out with my words as I pushed myself out of bed. “It’s not alright, Shane. I mean… Someday, I’d like…” I let my voice trail off, slipping into my boxers.

“Cal…” She stood up and hugged me around the waist. “Don’t make a mountain out of a mole hill. I don’t love you any less this morning than I did last night. Just come back to bed, okay?”

I could never say not to her, but I was reluctant. “Shane, how can you just brush something this important off?”

“Because it’s not. Let’s just get some more sleep, baby. Please?”

I looked down into her pleading eyes. There was something behind them. Something else. “Shane?” I asked her. “Is there something you’re not telling me?”

She bit her bottom lip and sat down on the end of the bed. “Cal…” She shook her head. “We’re leaving. Tonight; across the country to the other side of England.” Her eyes were distant. “You know, after England finally took over the rest of Africa and Europe I thought we’d never stop them. But Asia and America stood strong against the nation and the hunt for all the non-humans. The three nations of the world…” She looked up at me and smiled. “I’m rambling. Sorry.”

I shook my head in confusion. “Shane…” I fell to my knees in front of her, holding both her hands tightly. “We’re leaving?”

“No,” she shook her head. “I’m leaving…”

Everything around me came crashing down. My hopes, my dreams, everything was falling apart and I couldn’t stop it! I couldn’t stop Shane from leaving, I couldn’t control my thirst for her blood! I was helpless to everything around me all the time and I was sick of it! This couldn’t be happening. I would not let this happen!

I opened my mouth to say what I had wanted to say to Shane since the moment I laid eyes on her, but I couldn’t breathe. Pain was shooting through my body faster than I could conceive, and I fell back onto the floor. Shane flung herself over me. “Cal! What is it?”

“Go back"” I choked, grabbing her arm for strength. “Go back"to"to my apartment. The"the fridge… Get"get the steaks"and blood!”

“You’ll be dead by the time I get back.” She slipped her hand behind my head and raised me up to her neck. “Drink.”

“No…” I coughed in shock.

“You stubborn a*s!” she shouted. “Do you want to die?”

“I won’t"take your blood!” I persisted.

She let me go and I fell painfully back onto the hard wood. “Fine!” She stood up and opened the side table drawer, pulling out a black nine-millimeter. Kneeling next to me, she cocked it and held it to her head. “Calvin, would you drink my blood to save my life?”

Again she raised my completely limp body up to her neck. I had not choice. My eyes turned black and I sunk my fangs into her soft neck.

Blood…

Oh, her blood… The sweetest blood I’d ever tasted. The sweet, coppery taste of her warm red life flowed over my tongue and filled my throat with bliss.

I gulped and gulped the divine liquid, my ears growing numb to the world. I heard a dull thud and soon after I had to sift and hold Shane up for she had grown limp.

Stop!

I tore away, Shane’s body dropping to the floor. I had some how stood up and looked upon my love’s pail body in horror. I fell beside her, my head resting on her chest, praying for a beat.

“God… You’re dying…” I held her weak body in my arms as tightly as I could, crying my eyes out. “Shane!” I balled. “Shane, don’t go!”

“But I have to…” Her face and body were so weak, but her voice… That beautiful voice that filled my cowardly being with strength never wavered. “I have to go, baby. It’ll be okay…”

“No! No it won’t, Shane. I can’t take another 200 years alone. I’ll die… I’ll die without you…” She ran her tired fingers though my hair to calm me. “You can’t give up!”

“I’m not… Calvin, I love you…”

I opened my eyes. “Shane… No!”

“Calvin?” she whispered.

“What is it, my love?”

She wiggled a little in my arms. “You’re kind of squishing me…”

I looked down at her smiling, white, face. “Shane? You’re alright?”

She nodded, closing her eyes. “Yeah… Just tired. Can you get me some orange juice, baby?”

I couldn’t believe it. Was this again another dream? I helped her sit up, holding her close. “Oh, Shane… I love you.” She peered up at me with bright, gleaming brown eyes. “Shane, will you marry me?"
