A New LookA Chapter by Mary Something--Or--OtherNow things are getting interesting... Let's see how things look in a different POV:Calvin’s POV
I was holding her weak body in my arms as tightly as I could, crying my eyes out. “Shane!” I balled. “Shane, don’t go!”
“But I have to…” Her face and body were so weak, but her voice… That beautiful voice that filled my cowardly being with strength never wavered. “I have to go, baby. It’ll be okay…”
“No! No it won’t, Shane. I can’t take another 200 years alone. I’ll die… I’ll die without you…” She ran her tired fingers though my hair to calm me. “You can’t give up!”
“I’m not… Calvin, I love you…”
I flung myself up in a cold sweat, shaking. I was sucking my breaths in, like you do when you cry, and letting them out shakily. The room was dark. Where was I? I heard a soft breath and looked down. There she was: safe, sound, and thinking of everyone else but herself as always. I guessed that she was asleep and at the risk of waking her I ran my fingers threw her hair, like she did whenever I got upset. She was so beautiful.
So much more beautiful than I would ever be. But she didn’t see that. In her eyes I was a hero, her angel, not the demonic monster from Hell I knew I was. I knew that falling for a human wouldn’t end well. I knew that eventually I’d want her for dinner so bad I wouldn’t be able to resist. And she was so strong… I knew that I’d never have the strength to fight her off.
She stirred and lifted her head, blinking the sleep from her eyes.
“Hey…” I whispered.
“Hey!” she yawned. “Feeling any better my drunk little monkey?”
I smiled. “What?”
“Never mind… So, are you feeling okay?”
“Of course.” She sat down on the couch next to me and I wrapped the blanket around the both of us. “Did I hurt you, Shane? Please don’t lie.”
She sighed and rubbed her cut arm. “It doesn’t hurt, so technically no, you didn’t hurt me. Oh my gosh! I saw this super awesome squirrel today. It was all ‘Squeak!’ and I was all ‘Hi!’ and then he ran away. I was sad… But then, this like, huge bird—”
“Shane…” She looked at me innocently. “You’re crazy…”
“No!” she laughed. “I’m a monkey! Just like you! ‘cept I’m not drunk…”
I laughed. “You confuse me.”
“Well that’s nothing new.” She looked over at the clock then jumped out of my arms. “Crap! I’m late again!”
“Do you really care?”
“Well… No. But Roux’s sick Adrian’s kinda depressed right not—Jenna broke up with him that w***e—and Max has really been on my butt about ‘punctuality.’” She stuck out her tongue in disgust then ran off to find her coat.
“It’s next to your bed on the floor,” I called.
“That’s funny,” she yelled back.
I smiled. “What is?”
Her head popped out of the doorway. “You know more about my apartment than I do! Yup, you should definitely sleep over more often.”
She disappeared once again, only to reemerge seconds later with her jacket. “Feel up to coming with me?”
I was so stunned I couldn’t answer at first. She wanted me with her? After what I’d done she trusted me at “the company”? She even trusted me at all?
She came right over and sat down next to me. “What’s wrong baby?”
“Shane…” I breathed. “You…you wish me to accompany you? There of all places?”
She raised an eyebrow. “I think my craziness is starting to rub off…” She felt my forehead with the back of her fingers. “Hmm… You don’t feel hot. You look hot, but you don’t feel hot.”
I smiled and took her hand away. “I just mean that after what happened, I’m just surprised you’d still want me around.”
She kissed my cheek. “Yes, I have concluded that you are quite crazy.” She stood up with my hand in hers. “I love you, I always will not matter what. Plus, Max likes you so maybe he’ll go easy on me. Now, go get dressed.”
I went into her room to find my shirt. There was a picture by her bed I hadn’t noticed there before, and it was of her and me. We were at a park last week with Roux and Adrian, Roux had taken it actually. Shane had jumped onto my back and all we could do was laugh when Roux snapped the camera, but it was a captured moment in time where nothing mattered. We were together, but that annoying little fact kept lingering in the back of my mind, holding me back; Shane would someday die. © 2009 Mary Something--Or--Other |
