Thought Intruder

Thought Intruder

A Poem by Michael Alexander
"

This is a poem based on Daniel M. Wegner's book, "White Bears and Other Unwanted Thoughts: Suppression, Obsession, and the Psychology of Mental Control".

"

Think of what you want…..

Perhaps one day you’ll have it…..

But whatever you do….don’t think of a green rabbit.

 Imagine something calming…..

Possibly even funny……

But just watch out for…. that invasive green bunny…

Escape to an island……

Leave behind all your cares……..

Again now they enter……those lime colored hares…..

Just do your best….

To ignore how they hop……

Out of your mind at one moment…..but in again they pop…

 You could cover your eyes…..

No more should you read…….

But it seems neverending…..they continue to breed…

 Hum a little tune…..

But you find it may fail…..

Here he is once more….the olive tintned cottontail

Keep yourself busy….

It could work I do bet……

To keep out of mind…..that persistent emerald- painted pet
