Chapter 1

Chapter 1

A Chapter by Miranda Buchanan

I was walking through the hallways of my dorm building, looking for some late night parties. When I turned down one of the halls attached to the main hallway and ran right into one of the students knocking the books from her hand all over the floor. I started to pick up her stuff when a growl ripped across the hall. My head whipped up and I started to frantically look around trying to figure out what had made that noise. It seemed close yet at the same time very distant. I looked up at the girl only to find out that she was gone and so were her books. That was strange, I could have sworn she was right here. Maybe that noise scared her off? But I would have heard her leaving, and I would have felt her take the books out of my hands. No, she disappeared when that noise sounded. Except, what was that noise? It wasn't human that’s for sure and animals aren't allowed here, so I don’t know how one could get in here.
At that second the lights went out, leaving me in total darkness. There was an eerie silence here, like there haven’t been any inhabitants for years, but that wasn't true there were at least twenty to thirty people just on this floor and the building is five stories high. This place had many residents, and I was one of them. I kept turning and looking around trying to find out what had made that sound. I started walking down the hall when I hear the growl again, only this time much closer than before. I spun around only to be inches from the face of a beast about my size. I slowly backed away from the beast. Its long, knife sharp teeth were gnashing together at me, drool dripping from its long tight jaw, red fur covered it’s body, and it’s muzzle stuck out a foot from its face. Its paws were as big as my head and if I were to lay on the ground I would be about the same length as it. Its eyes were huge black coals filled with hatred. I shuddered and let out a whimper as I slowly crept backwards away from the beast. It barked and I let out a shriek while jumping back, it must have took that as a sign because it lunged forward, jaw opening as a long growl rippled through its throat. Its jaw clenched onto my shoulder ripping off skin and muscle, blood spewing all over the walls and carpeting of the hallway. The beast didn't stop for my screams, it just kept shoveling and biting into me.  I was being ripped apart while I was still alive. I flung my left arm and connected with the side of its face. The beast let out a howl and hit the ground, as it stood back up it shook out its coat and started changing right before my very eyes. I let out a yelp of surprise as I saw the bones of the animal bubbling up, dislocating, and breaking into different places.
The beast raised on its hind legs as its whole body started breaking, shrinking to half its size. Its muzzle crushed back into its face just leaving a nose, mouth, and eyes. Laying in place of the beast was the girl I ran into, naked on the ground and shaking with fear or coldness. Where I hit the beast a huge bruise started to form on her right cheek. I started to sit up when I figured out that I had no mobility of my right arm. I took of my jacket and laid it on her body only to find a huge bite mark on my right shoulder that ripped down to the left side of my abdomen. I started to hyperventilate when I saw my wound, but then I remembered the girl. I struggled to get her over my left shoulder and once I did, I quickly ran to my dorm and dropped her on my bed to give her some place to rest. I started to frantically look for some bondage to fix up my wound. I found a small stash in my roommates bathroom. By the time I rapped up my shoulder and started working down my side, my roommates entered our dorm.
When they saw the girl on my bed they started to whoop and cheer, but when I came out to greet them they started to worry about my injury.
“Frank what happened to you?” asked one of my roommates, Ramon, as Austin called the hospital.
“It’s nothing.” I tried to reassure them.
“A scrape is nothing, this is something.” stated Austin. Ramon nodded his head in agreement.
“We need to get you some help before you die.” I quickly ran and grabbed the phone out of Austin’s hand.
“We don’t need to call anyone. See, I’m fine.” I twisted my hips, making my right arm flip about.
“Frank, you don’t have mobility of your arm, do you?” Ramon asked poking my arm.
“It comes and goes!” I stated trying to make light of the situation.
“Frank! You can’t go through life without being able to work one arm, and defiantly not the arm you need the most!” Ramon stated getting slightly annoyed that I would even thinking of joking about this.
“I’m not going to Ramon, but I need to take care of this girl. She holds the answers that I need.” I told them trying to put through how much I need to stay here.
“Get in the car.” Ramon told me.
“No, Ramon I’m staying here.” I stated.
“Frank, get into the car.” Ramon told me raising his voice.
“No, I’m staying here with the girl.” I repeated.
“Frank, get into the god damn car.” Ramon snapped. At that moment I started to get angry and my breathing got heavier. A shiver broke out throughout my body as my fists kept clenching. A snarl ripped through my throat. My eyes got wide as a realization washed over me. I’m becoming a beast like that girl is. I’m becoming a bloodthirsty monster.
“Get out of here.” I growl at them as my muscles flex and my shirt rips.
“What? Frank, no you’re coming with us.” Austin called out to me. They sounded so far away. I shuddered and dropped to the ground howling with pain.
“Get out!” I snapped with a loud force behind it. Ramon and Austin stare at me, fear eating their eyes. They quickly ran out the door as they saw my teeth elongate, my jaw break, and my right arm breaking.  I yelped in horror as my bones started to break and readjust themselves. The girl is suddenly by my side coaxing me through this transformation. I shut my eyes trying to get rid of the pain.
