Your Sweet Angel

Your Sweet Angel

A Poem by C. Harter Amos

Where did she go;
     your sweet angel
who stood knee deep in blue bells and dandelions,
              children and lost lambs?
She who was able to answer each cry with her warm heart?

Where did she go;
     your sweet gypsy queen,
when heaven’s bells rang and the sky turned gray?
When no one else knew what to say
        to take your pain away?

Your soul was torn behind their window.
Only one set of horse prints in the sand,
Only you left in the family portrait on the mantle,
Waiting for visits from the children with your eyes.
She knew, how gently they would see with your eyes.
How good and strong these children are!

You played so hard it was easy to guess you’d go first
and she would turn grey waiting to share eternity with the one she loves.
With grandchildren on your knee,
it’s raw irony that you wait to reach for her again.
Need turned to desperation, you grasped who fell near,
     the crumbs thrown your way.
Now, a sense of calm acceptance permeates the horizon
     as you wait.

I can’t stand how thick the tornado of confusion is inside,
Which way to turn? Which way to turn?
How desperate the fight to forget and move on.

Where did she go,
The woman who loved all the intimacies
           you remember
with the glow of love on her cheeks?

Did you know how hard it would be to re-divide one into two?
To put a handful of dirt on a coffin and walk away without her?

I'm going to steal a review here I heard given to Colum McCann and say "this is language so beautiful it makes you want to claw yourself in pleasure" The ending reminded me of a country song by Vern Gosdin called Chiseled in Stone. In the song, an old man tells a young husband in a bar after his first newlywed fight, how lucky he is because, as he says, "son, you don't know about lonely, till it's chiseled in stone".
All your work is outstanding.

Hard is right! You have floored me and put me back two and a half years here Mimi. A sensitive and true write filled with the indescribable pain that comes with loss. How do we survive that? You have so rightly pointed out that acceptance is the key to peace in these situations of grief and that has to be nurtured daily. Knowing you, this was a personal write...so much care and love went into this...
Thank you for gracing these pages my friend :-) xxxx

Wow, Mimi this is piece radiated strenght, and the knowledge that I could relate to in your narration! I think the last two lines speak so much reality for so many people. Great work! ~ Jude xo :-)
